What is a glomerulus and where is it? How many are there?

The Bowman’s Capsule contains the Glomerulus, these are both part of a nephron of which the kidney has a gazillion. (The real estimate is the each kidney contains a million nephrons)
Here are some pics to orient you. These give some idea why the Fissel group uses slits.
The glomeruli are the main filtration device of the kidneys. Every minute more than a quart of blood passes through the kidneys. The glomerulus keeps things like albumin from going down the loop on Henle where active filtration takes place. Traditional dialysis filtration tries to mimic the glomeruli and the active filtration is replaced by balancing things like glucose and sodium through the dialysate. Other more complex chemistries are controlled through medication. Water balance, which the nephrons also do, is achieved, partially, through diet and medication. If you aren’t passing urine you need to limit your water intake.
In a room of engineers, scientists, and most physicians, the above is correct. In a room of nephrologist the above is not at all right.
