Electroosmosis with Ag/AgCl
Ag/AgCl electrodes are used overwhelmingly in streaming potential and sometimes in electroosmosis. The benefit of using Ag/AgCl in electroosmosis should be less gas generation and the ability to make an enclosed pump. Here is some information on my attempt at Ag/AgCl EO.
.2mm silver wires were coated with AgCl using protocol. Electrodes were immersed in EO setup as shown:
At currents over 10 mA it looked like we were getting water transfer to the negative electrode. However, we were also getting gas generation. Soon after the experiment started (~5 min) the positive electrode broke in half.
I think the gas generation occurred because we consumed all available AgCl on the negative electrode too quickly. The breakage of the positive electrode was concomitant with growth of an extremely thick layer of AgCl and possible over consumption of the remaining silver wire.
