Karl’s Streaming Potential/EO Device

I’ve been working on building a streaming potential/EO device for a while now. This was Yaron’s prototype:

Which itself was based on Jess’s design:

jess designI didn’t like that the device needed to twist together, and also that it was designed for the old circular 2-slot sepcons. My first prototype used the machine vise downstairs for structural support:

IMAG0434It gave me some streaming potential measurements, but because the two acrylic rods are held upright by compressing the sepcon chip, the chips were under unnecessary stress and prone to breakage.

This is my latest prototype:

IMAG0446

Note that the electrodes (which are painted with Ag/AgCl ink) are easily replaceable because they are just screwed in. I wasn’t able to collect streaming potential measurements because my measured voltage drop was drifting wildly (I think the electrodes had degraded). But assembling the device is much simpler with this design, and it should be simple to add a lead to the sandwiched chip so that I can modify the surface charge of metallized chips.
