First Attempts at Quantum Dot Capture in Nanopores
A collaborator of mine is interested in arranging quantum dots on a surface to demonstrate something called super irradiance. All of the sub-resolution particles could emit as one object (think laser) if the conditions are just so. Ideally, a bunch of quantum dots would be stacked closely together (but not touching) in a repeating fashion….
Discoloration – autoclave and Sepcon
I did an experiment earlier this week in the Sepcon and flat format. I intentionally broke membrane windows so that I could compare chips with no intact membranes vs. chips with 1 intact membrane (and also the effect of autoclaving). Unfortunately, all of the flat chips discolored overnight, so I couldn’t see any differences between…
The Enemy Within: Optimizing an OLCN PUA Coated Microporous Membrane Mimetic and Exposing an Unlikely Saboteur
The battle for soft membrane coatings wages on as we continue to optimize polyurethane acrylate (PUA) coatings for our osteomyelitis project, whose background is described here and here and initial progress is described here. Since our last update, we have honed in on our most promising recipe and tried to fine tune its settings in…
Filter Update – plan going forward
Since I’m now back pretty much full time on the filter project, I’ll give a quick update about where we stand and where I’m going with it, as well as some (negative) results from this week. On the membrane transfer side of things, we finally have a tool that can produce fine enough vapor…
Tecan sensitivity
I did a quick experiment in order to show everyone what the Tecan allows us to do. I made a dilution curve of rhodamine 6G in PBS and measured the absorbance and fluorescence with the fluorimeter. I first did an absorbance scan and found that the maximum absorbance was at 530nm (panel A). Then I…
Permeance tests with new Omega rotameter
Yaron has acquired an Omega rotameter (FL-3803ST) with interchangeable flow tubes. The tubes operate in three different ranges low (6-61 mL/min, 042-15-N), medium (150-1,682 mL/min, 082-03-N), and High (1,000-23,752 mL/min, 034-39-N). I’ve attached an excel file with the calibration data plotted. We fit the curves with polynomial trendline to get equations. Also in the workbook…
