Burst Pressure Tests of 75 nm HD chips (n=4)

(UPDATED with n=4)

I’ve repeated the burst pressure experiments performed by Sabrina, with the 75 nm thick hemodialysis chips. The previous chips are 50 nm with a burst pressure of 1.5 psi (10.5 kPa).

I found the burst pressure of the 75 nm chips to be 3.62 psi (25 kPa) n=4.

Increasing the thickness 1.5 x lead to an increase in burst pressure of more than double.

Importantly, the increase in burst pressure should allow for better results with the small animal dialysis where the transmembrane pressure is between 1 and 1.5 psi. Three wafers were above 4 psi, with the one chip bursting at 1.62 psi. When I proceed to the animal model studies, I will examine the chips with a dissection microscope to look for defects. Then, if membranes break during the study we may have some clues. Even the 1.62 psi is above the 1.5 psi of the 50 nm chips.

  1. We obviously need statistics better than n = 2 to publish. We need to show a statistical improvement over the thinner materials.

  2. I performed more burst tests today and updated the post. n=4 Burst pressure = 3.6 psi. std = 1.36
