Problems with the New Diffusion Chamber
I have tested the new diffusion chamber shown in a yesterday’s post.
The idea of our original design works. But there are several problems with this prototype:
– Paul used a very thick material to build the clamp, which blocks the objective of the microscope system;
– The upper hole in the substrate, designed for putting our membranes, is a little bit larger – it was supposed to be 1/3″ but Paul actually used 1/2″ drill because it was the one available. It could be better to fix our membranes in there if we reduce the hole size.
– The space between the two trenches is t0o close. These trenches are designed to embed the Pt wires, connected to the membrane and the electrolyte well, respectively. If they are too close, it could result in a short circuit.
I have consulted with Paul immediately after realizing these issues. He should be working on the new chamber now – I will keep checking with the progress. Besides addressing the above mentioned issues, I have brought out another improvement – to make the clamp length adjustable.
Lingyun,
These are the types of design issues that you should bring to the next meeting. Some of us know things like a 1/3″ drill bit does not exist, and other practical things about working with Paul.
Please feel free to bring a clear design on Tuesday, if you want feedback. Thanks…
Thanks Chris.
Yes, I am bringing the real stuff so that everyone can have a better understanding of the design and the issues.
