Carbonized membranes stable in KOH
I did a small experiment to demonstrate that a carbonized membrane would be stable in a harsh alkaline solution, such as KOH. I soaked a carbonized membrane and untreated membrane in %5 KOH at 40 C for an hour in an oven. As you can see, the carbonized membrane is still in-tact and the untreated membrane has been completely stripped of Si.

Chris –
I mis-spoke when I said the untreated membranes were stable in %5 KOH. It turns out that I diluted my last batch by 10X yesterday.
Terrific!
This could be very useful and it’s nice to have a coating in our pocket that protects the membranes. Hopefully more will be developed soon.
Are there spots on the untreated samples that did not etch? We those spots contaminated and visible before the etch?
